Those soldiers (and civilians who contribute directly to an Armed Force) who are unaccounted for during, or following, a period of war will be classified in one of four categories.  They are as follows:

• POW -- Prisoner of War

• MIA -- Missing in Action

• KIA -- Killed in Action

• NBD -- No Body Discovered

The U.S. Government, who determines the classification, maintains the following definition for each category:
